St. Francis in San Francisco
Published in Hardcover by Paulist Press (04 September, 2001)
Authors: Jack Wintz and Kathy Baron
Average review score:

St. Francis Reveals God's Love of Creation
Jack Wintz O.F.M., an award-winning journalist and editor of St. Anthony Messenger, has captured the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi in St. Francis in San Francisco recently published by Paulist Press. The book focuses on the 4-8 year old age group but, as classic children's literature so often does, St. Francis in San Francisco possesses a depth of meaning that adults will ponder and appreciate. St. Francis steps from history into modern day San Francisco, the city named for him. He encounters Johnny Thompson and Sunpatch, his dog. Sunpatch becomes the narrator of the story, providing readers with a view of life from the animal kingdom. The group commences on a jaunt through Golden Gate Park. Later they visit Mission Dolores, the birthplace of San Francisco. A cable car ride provides excitement. Their contemporary activities parallel stories of St. Francis' life in the thirteenth century: St. Francis feeding the wildlife in the park, mirrors his desire to spread food for the birds along the roads of Assisi, Italy, at Christmastime eight centuries ago. The little group's outward journey into San Francisco is accompanied by an inward tour of values. St. Francis of Assisi is a saint treasured by people of all religions. The reasons for his universal respect are highlighted as St. Francis praises the beauty of creation and the need for humans to revere and care for it. Coupled with this is the powerful message of God's love for all of creation. A bit of history of the founding of the California missions, a prayer for the American Indians who inhabited San Francisco before the arrival of the missionaries, and an exciting cable car ride with a group of fellow passengers who could be from anywhere on the globe round out a book that will be read many times to and by the young and the young at heart. Father Wintz is the author of Lights: Revelations of God's Goodness, an inspirational book in which he describes "moments of light" in everyday life which will inspire those searching for God. His reporting has taken him from interviewing such Hollywood celebrities as Gene Kelly, Bob Newhart and Brooke Shields to travels around the world -- Berlin, Jerusalem, Hiroshima, Viet Nam --to write on social issues. Artist Kathy Baron illustrates Father Wintz's work with a trio of delightful characters accompanied by a menagerie of God's creatures-buffalo, quail, opossums, raccoons, snakes, ducks, fox, a pony, hummingbirds, rabbits to name a few. A tiny mouse pops up in surprising places. San Franciscoscapes grace some of the full page illustrations. St. Francis in San Francisco has been a delightful book to share with my granddaughter as we explore God's love for all creation. It makes a great gift for a child, a library, a lover of God's creation and any admirer of St. Francis of Assisi.

Standing on a Volcano: The Life and Times of David Rowland Francis
Published in Hardcover by Missouri Historical Society Pr (October, 2001)
Author: Harper Barnes
Average review score:

As exciting as a spy novel
Journalist Harper Barnes' biography of David Rowland Francis,
American politician and diplomat whose career ranged from St. Louis in
America's heartland to the depths of Russia during the Bolshevik
revolution (1917-19), is full of surprises. As the youngest mayor of
St. Louis and governor of Missouri at the turn of the 20th century, he
lead progressive Democrats and fathered the St. Louis World's Fair in
1903-04. Appointed ambassador to Russia by President Woodrow Wilson, he
endured terrible hardships during its revolutionary period, aided by his
articulate and loyal friend and valet, African-American Philip Jordan.
Much of the Russian story reads like an exciting spy novel. Wonderfully
researched and well written, it is a compelling account that enriches
both United States' and international history. It captivates the reader
and offers heretofore unknown insights into not only a remarkable
American but United States foreign policy at a pivotal time in world
history.

This Living Mirror: Reflections on Clare of Assisi

Authors: Teresa Sister Frances and Teresa Francis
Average review score:

This Living Mirror: Reflections on Clare of Assisi
Rarely does a book of this calibre come along that brings to so much light the mind and heart of "the footprint of Our Lady", St. Clare of Assisi. This book will be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys the writings of Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C. Sr. Teresa Francis, as a Poor Clare herself and having lived the life established by St. Clare, has a profound grasp of this beautiful spirituality and has been able to clarify many issues important to St. Clare, which seem to be confusing to those who do not understand this form of life. Unlike several books available on the market, Sr. Teresa Francis does not apologize for the thoughts and ideas of St. Clare. Rather, she shows their beauty and vitality in their most radical form. This Living Mirror is proof that there is no gap between the woman and her Order that lived in the 12th century and the Order that lives today.

Wonderfully refreshing and a must for any lover of St. Clare or the contemplative life.

Thy Will Be Done: Letters to Persons in the World
Published in Hardcover by Sophia Inst Pr (July, 1995)
Authors: Francis, St. De Sales, De Sales St Francis, St Francis de Sales, and Francis
Average review score:

Marvelous pastoral advice
In this collection of letters written by Saint Francis de Sales, it's easy to see that people are the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Saint Francis' gentle advice and counsel is as appropriate today as it was 300+ years ago. He clearly teaches his correspondents how to achieve holiness in whatever walk of life they find themselves in. Although a few of these letters are written to men and women in religious life, most are to ordinary laywomen (mostly) and laymen. Great spiritual reading!
